Today you will journey into the remote interior of Uganda, into the Queen Elizabeth National Park. This journey will begin with a two hour flight from Entebbe to Kasese, followed by an approximately 1.5 hour drive to the Kyambura (pronounced Chambura) Gorge Lodge, your accommodation for the next two nights. Check in, settle in and watch the sun go down whilst sipping sun downers and admiring the Rwenzori Mountain range in the distance.
The day begins with an extraordinary opportunity - an opportunity to come face to face with our closest “genetic relative” - the Chimpanzee. The Kyambura Gorge, which looks even more incredible as it stands in stark contrast to the surrounding grasslands, is home to a wide variety of wildlife, birds and primates. Here we will track these incredible primates whilst at the same time taking in and enjoying the amazing scenery and the other primates this Gorge has to offer such as baboons, Vervet monkeys and black and white Colobus monkeys. This afternoon, after your lunch and a rest, you will take a trip on a boat through the Kazinga Channel, which links Lake Edward and Lake George. Swapping primates for mammals, this cruise will take us close to the largest concentration of Hippopotamuses in the world. Did you know that a hippo, despite its size, can build up to a speed of 48 km/hr especially if you are threatening to steal his water! You will also hopefully have the opportunity to witness other animals such as elephants and buffaloes coming to drink from the water, as well as enjoy the colour and sounds of the wide variety of birdlife to be found in these environs.
This morning, after your breakfast, you will have the opportunity to join a local research team whilst they goes about his tasks of tracking, studying and recording the activities of different prides of Lions in this National Park. What a fantastic opportunity alongside the finding and enjoying some of the 600 recorded species of birds and the myriad types of wildlife found in this park. After your lunch you can choose any of the options available to you from the Lodge, which could include resting and relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere by the pool or enjoy a walk along the recently developed Kyambura Gorge Buffer Walk that allows you breathtaking views over the Gorge, the park and the reserve.
Following breakfast and a leisurely morning, it will be time to check out of your lodge and travel the short one hour distance to Ishasha, your place of stay for the next two nights. Once you check in, settle in and have eaten lunch you will head out on an afternoon Game Drive hoping to spot the elusive Tree Lion. There is only one subspecies of Lion that can climb trees and Ishasha is only one of two places in the world where you can view these Lions. You can also keep your eye out for the Ugandan Kob - a type of Antelope that you can see on the Ugandan coat of arms.
Today you will continue your Game Drive exploration of this incredibly remote landscape, keeping an eye out for more Lions and also for the elusive Leopard that is known to lounge around in trees, scratching trees to mark its territory and watching the world go by. Spend the day soaking in the landscape, the wildlife, the birds, the sounds, the sights and the smells, learning and seeing for yourself just how life is in this unique part of the world.
After breakfast this morning you will check out and begin the journey south towards the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to Bwindi Lodge, your home for the next three nights. Watch the landscape change as you drive, admiring what you can see of the local culture as you gaze out your window. Once we arrive at Bwindi Lodge you can check in, rest, relax, stretch your legs and adapt yourself to this next location, amidst a deep forest that does absolute justice to it's name!
This morning after breakfast, your next adventure begins. Today you will spend the day tracking, trekking and walking in the dense thick forest of Bwindi, watching, waiting and wishing for your moment with a silverback mountain Gorilla. To have such a privilege be prepared to call on your stamina and patience reserves! The local guides and experts are familiar from day to day with where the Gorillas are congregating but nature is nothing if not its own master and so take that knowledge with you as you begin your trek. Once you return from your Gorilla Tracking experience and have rested you might enjoy a look around the Tea Processing facility that the lodge has set up in conjunction with a local initiative. See, learn and understand how your morning tea is grown, picked and processed to taste exactly how you enjoy it each morning.
Nature being nature, and Gorillas being one of nature's most incredible creatures, you have another day today to continue tracking and watching for and spending time with these most majestic, social and humbling of animals. Relax in the evening after your trek, enjoying the sounds and sights, taking in and replaying all the memories of the last few days.
Today after your breakfast you will bid farewell to the Impenetrable Forest, the Gorillas it houses and the life it sustains to begin your homebound journey. This will begin with a flight from Kihihi Airstrip back to Entebbe where you can continue with your onward journey home.
