The Snow Leopard, locally known as Shan, is an extremely rare large cat species, primarily inhabiting the rugged terrain of Central and South Asian high mountain ranges. Hemis National Park and the Ule region in Ladakh offer excellent opportunities to observe this elusive animal. The best time for this trip is during the cold winter months of January to March when the Snow Leopard descends to lower valleys following its primary prey, the Blue Sheep. Additionally, Ladakh is home to other lesser-known species like the Red Fox, Tibetan Wolf, Eurasian Lynx, Argali (Great Tibetan Sheep), Bharal (Blue Sheep), Shapu (Ladakhi Urial), the Ibex, and more, which can be spotted with some luck during this journey.
